Course Summary
English 10 focuses on analyzing literature and informational texts to explore themes, literary elements, and argumentation. Students will develop their writing skills through analysis and create a research paper based on selected texts.
By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:
Perform a close reading of fiction and nonfiction texts by applying reading strategies
Support analysis through textual evidence
Use context to distinguish between denotative and connotative meanings
Determine central ideas and themes of texts
Determine author’s purpose and point of view
Analyze the impact of diction on meaning and tone
Write narrative and argumentative texts
Analyze literature across multiple genres
Analyze author’s choices to create specific effects

Analyze how theme and characterization are developed over the course of a text
Analyze various cultural experiences in works of literature
Write routinely by producing narrative, argumentative, and informative texts
